Bitch Session - What’s Cookin’?

calvin1Now — I know a lot of people find cooking a relaxing occupation. Most of the time I don’t mind it … provided I have the time. But when one is working full time, getting home around 5:30 and there is homework to supervise, and odds and ends to get done, it’s a little difficult to come up with a healthy meal. Fortunately hubby does half the cooking, so it isn’t completely on my shoulders.

I’m thankful that we’re in a day and age of easily prepared meals. Breakfast? Instant oatmeal or frozen waffles. Lunch? Whatever leftovers happen to be in the fridge, or a sandwich for the little darlin’s lunchbox (along with various other prepackaged goodies). Dinner? A little tougher but there are always quickie meals to be found. Weekends tend to be easier since the time is there to indulge in making a full meal. Breaded porkchops, a tenderloin, a roasted chicken … with all the sides. And even then, with prepackaged potatoes, canned veggies and frozen desserts, it doesn’t take half the time that it used to take my mother or my grandmother.

Come to think of it … what the hell am I bitchin’ about in this blog?

During the week, when its my turn to cook … I generally head over to Zaffiro’s for a pizza. Now that’s my idea of cookin’.

Liz, I have a couple of easy to make meals — including microwave meatloaf. It’s good! I’ll look for the recipes when I get a chance and send them to you. My other easy-to-make standby is spaghetti. And fish is easy to make. Do you like tilapia and salmon?

  2. Liz Kreger Says:

I’ll try out your recipes, Edie, but I think you’d be hard pressed to beat John’s meatloaf. He does a yummy one. Spaghetti is a stand-by for us and we have a chicken dish that can be made within an hour. Tilapia is the preferred fish between John and I. Little darlin’ won’t touch it. She hasn’t developed a palate yet for seafood.

There is always crock pot recipes you can try. It can be cooking while you are at work. I never had a dinner from a crock pot but I know people who just love them.

Y’know Marge? I never think of the crock pot. We even have a really nice one and a cookbook to try out recipes. Gotta dig it out and find something interesting. Thanx for the reminder.

I don’t like cooking - but I think that my cooking would look like yours with pre-cut frozen veggies and packaged sides.

You wanna know how I solved my cooking problem? My folks moved in last month! Mom only works about 4-8 hours a week and Dad hasn’t been able to find work, so they’ve been doing most of the food shopping and cooking. I try to help out with dishes, because I don’t want them to feel that I’m taking advantage of them. They acknowledge, though, that I do work during the day - and I pay the bills. So, it seems like a good partnership.

Since I broke up with my boyfriend several months ago, I haven’t dated; figured I didn’t need that stress. So, it’s not like my folks have ruined my love life! : )

Y’know Dee? I’m beginning to see this more and more. Folks moving in with the son/daughter. Personally, if you get along with your folks, I’d say it was an ideal situation. Personally I cannot see living with my in-laws, but I could see living with my mom … in a pinch.

Enjoy the help. Mom and dad are right. You work all day; you’re tired. I don’t see that as taking advantage of mom and dad. They’re chipping in where they can. Win-win situation, IMO.
