Last Saturday I was visiting with my mother when I got a call from Barbara Vey of PW. She happens to live across the street from mom and noticed my car out front. Well, this is always a good opportunity to catch up, so I didn’t hesitate to pop on over. Barb apologized profusely over the messiness of her house and I had to remind her that friends don’t give a damn about how someone’s house looks. Though, I had to admit, the clutter was greater than usual. That was probably because she was out of town at back to back conferences and had just gotten home.
She also had four of those big post office bins filled with unopened books shipped to her. Do you smell an ulterior motive here? Yes, I helped her open all of that mail and sort through the dozens of books she received from authors and publishers. Barb gets a ton of mail in the hope that one of her readers will read the book and write a blurb which will appear on Barb’s PW blog. That doesn’t always happen since there are so many books and she has so few readers. I try to be one of them, but I’m sorry to say that I just don’t deliver as often as she would like. Yes, I do a ton of reading, but for some reason, doing that little five or six line blurb just doesn’t happen.
So, in the future I intend to make a greater effort to send those blurbs to Barb. She has been a good friend to me and I’d like to be more of a help to her.
